A visit to see the magnificent Taj can be enjoyed more by stopping over for lunch at The Oberoi – Amarvilas. Known for its amazing view of the Taj Mahal since it is within 500 m from it, Oberoi is also known for its service.
Most of my journeys have a hint of adventure associated with them and the same came about in my Agra trip. Trusting the GPS navigator to reach the hotel, we had a merry ride through galis which was an acheievement in itself to navigate through. All the while we wondered what would happen if were had to turn back… I mean reversing on such small roads looked impossible!
Soon, the map showed us as 1 km from the destination.. which also meant that we were in meters distance from the Taj Mahal.
Yes, we’d reached the high security west end gate with barricades all around to ensure no vehicles cross without a permit.
The candid view of the Taj was amazing and to imagine we were so close, I felt a sense of joy! A call to Just Dial to get the hotel’s number and address and we were on our way again.. The Oberoi is situated near the East End gate road of Taj Mahal and said to be within 500-600 m from it.
“You have reached the destination”, our GPS navigator said and the guard opened the door. As one enters, the magnitutde of the place hits you. while walking from the courtyard to the main entrance, the lobby is a sight in itself.
An in your face view o the Taj hit us as we looked out of the hotel lobby. WOWiiiiieeeeeee!!! On enquiring from the staff we were told that all of the rooms in the hotel have a view of the Taj but not the restaurant as it on a lower level so the landscaping hides it.
Oberoi’s Amarvilas has an Indian speciality restaurant which opens only for dinner. We opted to have lunch at the Bellevue. Bellevue serves Indian and Italian cuisine out of which we opted to got with an Indian meal.
I liked that fact that our seats were garden facing. A thoughtful decision on their end which was well appreciated in my books!
The food was delectable and the service warm. Starting from the minestrone to the gobhi, mixed vegetable, daal tadka.. the meal was very light.
The dessert needs to be given a special mention here. A platter of sorts of various desserts made out of mangoes, the Mango Sampler was simply amazing. Starting with fresh cut mangoes, a mango sorbet, mango soufflé and jelly to mango ice cream. I was in mango heaven after eating it and my favourite from the lot was the mango jelly.
With a satisfied stomach and a memorable experience, we moved towards the remainder of our journey: Taj Mahal! One should definitely visit this hotel for having a meal at least if not staying.
